The gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State Barr. Chijioke Edeoga and his All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) counterpart, Mr, Frank Nweke Jr have called on the leadership of the Nsukka Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture (NSCCIMA) to continue to give purposeful leadership if it must take the business sector of Nsukka cultural zone to the next level.
Speaking during the recent Public Presentation of Nsukka Investment and Economic Development Blueprint held at the CEC, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Barr. Edeoga expressed his desire to continue to support the activities of the Chamber to ensure her lofty goals were achieved. He recalled that while he was in government, he used his good offices to get all the local government areas in Nsukka cultural zone to key into the programmes of the chamber adding that he was ready to do more if given the opportunity. He called on the participants to brace up to the challenges of proper leadership recruitment coming up in 2023 because according to him, “the success we make in business development and in economic sector is dependent on the quality of leadership we have from next year. I am running for the position of governor in Enugu State and I know that if I supported the chamber while I was just a commissioner for Local Governments, I will even do more when elected the governor of the state”.
Barr. Edeoga said when he becomes the governor next year, it will be best for the people of the state as he will be bringing his experiences to bear.
In his own speech, Mr. Frank Nweke Jr, praised the organizers of the event stressing that the hallmark of enduring economic development lies in the ability of all the critical stakeholders to understand the importance of shared responsibilities in the way the society runs. Nweke confirmed that a society or state gets what it deserves adding that for a state to work well, leaderships must remember that it does not have the monopoly of knowledge. He stated that Public/Private dialogue is very key to economic development.
He said: Enugu State needs quality leadership and if you give me your vote as the governor during the next election, I will move Enugu to another level.
Earlier in his address, the chairman of the occasion, His Excellency, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo who was represented by Chief Frank Ugwu praised the leadership of the Chamber for her laudable programmes that are geared towards moving the greater majority of the people of Nsukka out of poverty. Dr. Nwodo urged the chamber to continue to develop ideas that will empower the youths and take them out of poverty.
In his welcome address, the President of the chamber, Dr. Basil Onugu took time to explain the reason for the development of the Blueprint which in summary was to catalyze the growth in critical sector of development especially in areas of commerce, industry, entrepreneurship, housing, mining, agro and agro-allied sector.
Dr. Onugu further stressed that as part of its contribution to the development of Nsukka cultural zone and in line with the core mandate of promoting, protecting, stimulating and facilitating the establishment and growth of SMEs in the zone, Enugu State and by extension, the Federation as a means of increasing the commercial and economic activities that can grow our GDP, the chamber decided to embark on this mission of developing the blueprint.
Also speaking, the chairman of the Blueprint Presentation and Launching Planning Committee, Barr. Sam Otoboeze said: “It is a trite that Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) constitute the engine room of every developing economy, no matter where situated. It therefore, follows that the more SMEs established, the more jobs and wealth are created. The compendium will serve as a veritable and useful document for business incubators and accelerators. In the blueprint, you will find so many businesses and investment opportunities that fits into any of the SMEs ecosystems.
The highlight of the event was the formal presentation and launch of the Blueprint as well as the recognition and honoring of some of the illustrious sons and daughters of Nsukka zone who have shown much concern for the economic emancipation of zone. The awardees include Janet Amu Foundation, Dr. Camillus Ezugwu, His Royal Highness Samuel (Jr.) Ikechukwu Asadu, Dr. Cecilia Asogwa, Prof. Frank Ezugwu and Prof. Engr. Aloy Attah among others.
