Two men died recently in the University town of Nsukka in a most bizarre and controversial circumstances after they were alleged to have organized a funeral ceremony of a dead friend/co-in-law, Hon. Thaddeus Eze who was a one-time councilor in Igbo Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State. There are conflicting reports about the possible causes of the death of these three men.
According to a dependable source, “there was an instruction from a Chief Priest of one of the fiery deities in Uhunowerre Community that the dead ex-councilor should be buried but that no form of ceremonial rites be performed for him”.
Upon inquiries, it was discovered that there was this allegation that the ex-councillor was having some conjugal affairs with the wife of the chief priest and that the only respite for the family was to get him buried but should make no attempt to organize any form of rites or ceremony in honour of the dead ex-councillor.
Although the immediate family took the message very seriously, a co-in-law to the deceased, married to the younger sister to the late ex-councillor and a native of Iheakpu Awka who lived in Enugu and another friend of the deceased said to be a man of God decided to ignore the warning and prepared some quantities of food and drinks as part of the funeral ceremony. At the end of the day when everybody had left, the co- in-law went to his house at Iheakpu along with his friend to pass the night. The next day, the two men were discovered to have died in very mysterious circumstances. The development threw the communities of Iheakpu and Uhunowerre into confusion as all those who ordinarily wanted to visit the home of the ex-councillor for the purpose of commiserating with the family made u-turns to their respective homes.
However, another source told The Starlite that the two men might have been suffocated to death by the carbon monoxide emitted from the exhaust pipe of a small power generating plant which was set on in a separate room within the house. “The deadly smoke from the generator might have been the cause of their death not essentially because of the warning from the chief priest to the deity”. A source told The Starlite.
All efforts to speak with close relations to the deceased failed as no one was willing to speak on the matter for fear of incurring the wrath of the deities.
