The Labour Party governorship candidate in Enugu State, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga has called on the people of Enugu State to vote for a candidate that they can trust with the state resources as governor in the forth coming general election.
Edeoga made this call recently during a reception organized for him by the people of the seven autonomous communities in Eha Amufu, Isi Uzo Local Government Area of the state. Thanking the mammoth crowd that gathered at St. Philips Anglican Church field, Edeoga said the day was the happiest in his life and promised to continue to shun corruptive act in and out of government.
Edeoga said the power he seeks is the power to do good for the greater majority of Ndi Enugu who he described to have been under the yoke of bad leadership, official corruption and impunity perpetrated by leaders entrusted with power.
He said: “I was a local government Chairman; I never stole any money from the council. I was in the House of Representatives and my record is there for everyone to see. I worked with a President of this country and there was never a story around me concerning financial misappropriation. I served the present government and there is no record of financial embezzlement around me. You can go and verify. I also challenge anybody to come forth and prove me wrong.
“In the light of this, I can assure you that the safety of the state funds will be guaranteed in my hand as a governor. I was brought up to be contented with whatever little I have and that had been my way of life. I have the requisite experience on how government runs and so you can count on it that as soon as we are elected, there will be no dull moment.
However, the reception recorded a huge attendance as the plot by the PDP led government to stop a civic reception by the people of Isi-uzo local government in honour of the party's governorship candidate in Enugu state, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, and his party failed woefully.
Against an alleged order by Gov Ugwuanyi that no public facility in any part of Isi-uzo local government should be made available for Edeoga's reception, thousands of people of the area including youths, women, men, traditional title -holders, religious leaders and, several colourful traditional dance troupes trooped to the St. Philip Anglican Church field, Ehamufu where they accorded Edeoga a resounding reception.
Banners and fliers carrying pictures of the LP governorship candidate and the presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, flooded the venue of the civic reception as various groups danced and sang praises of Edeoga, Peter Obi and Labour Party. They raised their thumbs high for Edeoga as incumbent Governor Ugwuanyi's successor-in-waiting.
Among the public facilities Governor Ugwuanyi was alleged to have given stern order not to be used by the organisers of Edeoga's reception included the Ehamufu College of Education, as well as all the secondary and primary schools in the area.
Edeoga, who lamented Governor Ugwuanyi's order, regretted that he was also denied the Ehamufu College of Education which his father was instrumental to bringing to Ehamufu. He added that he did not only play a huge role in Ugwuanyi's governorship victory in both his first election and re-election but also served in his administration without any blemish.
"Today is my happiest day," Edeoga stated, "and I commend the courage of the Bishop of Eha Amufu Diocese of Anglican Church and the clergies for granting the organisers the use of this reception venue. The state government had given an order to all the schools, both primary and secondary in this area, including the Ehamufu College of Education, which my father attracted, not to allow the organisers of this reception use their places."
He added: "Notwithstanding that order, the Bishop, Rt. Rev. Daniel Nkemjika Olinya, gave this place, and, everyone in Isi-Uzo, the youth, the old, women, men, traditional title holders, clergies, etc, are here. I am grateful and I am confident that I will win the Governorship election because I served his government well, and equity and justice are in my favour."
Edeoga further stated: "The only promise I will make to you is that I will not disappoint you as Governor. We will bring development to Isi-uzo and the entire Enugu state and I will not divert public funds. I have never been found to be corrupt. EFCC has never indicted me. I have never been imprisoned and I will never be found guilty of corruption."
Highlight of the reception was the endorsement of his Governorship ambition by the traditional title-holders in the local government who gave him the Ofo insignia and shielded him against any harm, as well as prayers by the clergies led by Bishop Olinya to God to grant him victory at the poll.
The Onorogwu of Ehamufu, Chief David Anukenyi flanked by several other traditional title-holders performed the prayers and presentation of the traditional ofo to Edeoga.
Several other LP candidates including Dr John Nwokeabia, the party's deputy Governorship candidate, Chief Okey Ezea, the Enugu-North Senatorial candidate, Barr. Oyibo Chukwu, the Enugu East Senatorial candidate, Prof. Nnamchi, the Enugu East/Isi-uzo federal constituency candidate, Hon. Dennis Agbo for Udenu/Igbo-Eze North federal constituency, Hon. Harrison Ogara for Igbo Eze South state Constituency, Hon. Malachy Oke-Onyechi for Nsukka West state constituency, Hon. Gabriel Eze for Isi-uzo state constituency and Hon. Princess Obiajulu Ugwu for Enugu South Rural Constituency among others.
Other top LP leaders at the event were chairman of the party in the state, Barr. Casmir Agbo, vice-chairman, Enugu North Senatorial zone, Hon. Kingsley Ugwu, and General Chris Eze (rtd), among others.
The reception was indeed a carnival as various colourful cultural dance troupes, youths, women and men in the area trooped to the event to celebrate Edeoga and Labour Party singing praises of the Governorship candidate, the presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi displaying banners and fliers with pictures of Obi, Edeoga and his deputy Governorship candidate, Dr. John Nwokeabia.
